A tour on the Machine Learning Research happening at the HMIML Lab at AUB
Invited Talk - 6 March 2020, 10:00-11:00, Julia House
We live in an interesting ERA, the era of MACHINE LEARNING where the trinity of the hardware, big data and algorithms is enabling unprecedented solutions: Amazon recommending our shopping list and delivering it by drones, Facebook finding our lost friends, our houses adapting autonomously to our life style, virtual reality and social robots keeping us healthy while self-driving car taking us safely around… In short, a science fiction movie becoming a reality or a nightmare…
In this talk, I will briefly introduce the theoretical research (non-iteratively trained networks, biologically inspired stochastic networks and reinforcement learning) happening in the HMIML lab at the American University of Beirut and focus specially on smart living and media research for different applications and data modalities.
Short Bio
Mariette Awad is an associate professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the American University of Beirut. She received her PhD in electrical engineering in 2007 and was a visiting professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, Intel Mobile Group, and MIT. She was invited by CVC labs, Google and Qualcomm to present her work on machine learning and image processing. She has published a book “ Efficient Machine Learning” in 2015 as well as in numerous conferences and journals and is managing few grants. She is a core member of the UN ESCWA Knowledge Hub where she collaborates with a team of 6 other experts from top Lebanese universities to assist the UN ESCWA office in Beirut in handling and solving central problems related to information and knowledge management and decision support processes in the region. She created in 2009 the IEEE Women in Engineering Lebanon Chapter and she is a title IX deputy at AUB. Since 2017, she is on the organizing committee for the Stanford Women in Data Science conference at AUB. She is an active member in IEEE and reviewer for IEEE transactions. Prior to her academic position, she was with IBM System and Technology group in Vermont as a wireless product engineer where she earned her management recognition, several business awards, and multiple patents. Her current research interests include machine learning, data analytics and internet of things. She can be reached at mariette.awad@aub.edu.lb.
