International and European Standards on Information Communication Technologies (ICT)

Invited Talk - 20 February, 10:00-11:00, Julia House

Standardization the process of developing standards, is recognized by policy-makers as a useful tool for innovation competitiveness and growth. Standards perform fundamental economic functions and their relevance for ICT is acknowledged by firms, researchers and policy-makers. ICT standards play an essential role in achieving interoperability of new technologies and can bring significant benefits to both industry and consumers. They help ICT markets remain open and allow consumers the widest choice of products.

Standards activities can help bridging the gap between research and industrial development of products and services by facilitating the commercialization of research results. ICT Standardization Priorities focuses on 5 priority areas: 5G, Internet of Things, cloud computing, cybersecurity and data technologies because they are essential for wider EU competitiveness.

The presentation introduces the work of the Cyprus Organization for Standardization (CyS) and explains what standards are and how they are developed and implemented.  It presents how standards are related to innovation and research and identifies those standards that are relevant to RISE’s operation.  It further explains how RISE researchers can participate in standardization committees and how standards can help RISE researchers into developing research and innovation.
