In the presence of staff members, students and graduates of the Cyprus University of Technology, an informative event for the research and innovation centre RISE-Research Centre on Interactive Media, Smart Systems and Emerging Technologies, took place on Tuesday 2 April 2019.  RISE centre (rise.org.cy) began its operations in 2018, following the successful outcome of both the evaluation stages of the European Commission's first H2020-TEAMING calls, which opened in 2014 and for which the final results were announced in 2017.

RISE, is the only centre of excellence in Cyprus that focuses on Interactive Media, Smart Systems and Emerging Technologies, and is a joint venture between the three public universities of Cyprus (Cyprus University of Technology, University of Cyprus, and the Open University of Cyprus), internationally renowned partners Max-Planck Institute for Informatics in Germany, University College London and the Nicosia Municipality as the coordinator partner.  RISE consortium has acquired seed funding of approximately €50 million in cash and in kind from the European Commission, the Cyprus Government, the consortium partners and other sources.

The event was opened by the Rector of the Cyprus University of Technology, Professor Andreas Anagiotos.  In his speech, the Rector, among other things, referred to the support that the centre receives from the Cyprus University of Technology.  He also referred to the importance of the project for the long-term sustainability of the scientific, technological and economic development of Cyprus and Europe.
 
A presentation of the strategic planning of the Centre of Excellence was presented by the RISE CEO, Mr. Spyros Nicolaou.  Mr. Nicolaou elaborated on the strategic goals of the center and explained how RISE can be sustainable and expand.

Subsequently, Assistant Professor Despina Michael-Grigoriou, the coordinator on behalf of the Cyprus University of Technology for RISE project, presented opportunities for research and cooperation with the Centre of Excellence.

The event was concluded with a discussion between the representatives and the members of the university community who had the opportunity to submit their questions and suggestions.
