Climathon Nicosia 2019: a 24-hour Hackathon dedicated to Climate Innovation

The global climate event 'Climathon' was held once more with great success in Cyprus. In the five consecutive years the competition has been running, Cyprus took over its organization three times: once in 2016 in Limassol and twice in Nicosia, in 2018, and this year, on 25 - 26 October, in Julia House (PwC Cyprus).

The “Climathon”, as part of the EIT Climate-KIC, started as a marathon of developers (hackathon) and evolved into a global initiative that brings together thousands of volunteers annually, with the aim of rendering solutions to the problems and challenges our city is facing, as a result of climate change. Participants are invited to use their experiences and knowledge, collaborate and develop innovative solutions, which will make the city more environmentally friendly and more sustainable.

This year, RISE (Research centre on Interactive Media, Smart Systems and Emerging Technologies) was one of the organizers and proudly supported with this initiative individuals passionate about improving the environment and people's well-being.

The 3 groups that formed the participants of this year's event, were asked to work for 24 hours and present in front of a team of judges (formed by representatives of enterprises and organizations), their ideas for one of the following three challenges:
  • Nature-based solutions
  • Sustainable food systems
  • Digital nudging as a pro-climate action enabler

#GROW was the major winner, followed by #GardensForTheFuture and #Cleanthon.

All 3 teams will have the opportunity to be hosted and guided by RISE for a period of up to 3 months to develop their idea, as well as receive guidance from CSI Cyprus on how to develop their idea into a business (where applicable) and secure funding. In addition, they will have the opportunity to participate for free in one of the seminars organised by the Energy agency of Cyprus, (interest-based) and the opportunity to apply for the global awards Climathon in Paris. Finally, the big winner will receive free consulting services and access to seminars of the Infocredit group.

Congratulations to all teams!
