Transparency in the Debate on AI and Inclusion

Dr. Jahna Otterbacher, from RISE and the Open University of Cyprus participated at the 4th Industrial Revolution Conference organized by the Cyprus Parliament at the Cyprus House of Representatives, titled "Innovation, Artificial Intelligence and Integration".

During the discussion on the possible dangers of AI for the community and for industry, Jahna Otterbacher argued that the lack of transparency that characterizes most of the systems and techniques used today - whether by citizens / end users (e.g.,  Google search or Google maps) or even developers (e.g., proprietary cognitive services / AI components used to build new applications and services) - is ultimately the root of most problems. Where there is no transparency, it is difficult to understand the machine’s behavior and how its outputs / decisions might be harmful.
