RISE, a research centre in Cyprus focusing on Interactive media, Smart systems and Emerging technologies announces an open competition for all Cyprus museums and cultural sites interested in incorporating interactive media and emerging technologies in their premises to enhance the visibility of their collections and make visitors’ experience more interactive, educational and enjoyable. The winning proposal will be funded by RISE (maximum amount: 20.000 euros that can include relevant specialized equipment, services, system design, development, training, maintenance etc.)

RISE is a joint venture between the three public universities of Cyprus (University of Cyprus, Cyprus University of Technology and Open University of Cyprus), the Municipality of Nicosia, and two renowned international partners, the Max Planck Institute for Informatics (Germany) and University College London (UK) (http://www.rise.org.cy).  RISE embraces the motto “Inspired by Humans. Designed for Humans” and its guiding philosophy is to produce technologies to work “in the wild”. In this context, RISE is reaching out to all the museums and heritage sites in Cyprus which are interested in a collaboration aiming to incorporate emerging technologies that would help them meet the needs of the current digital era and become more visible and attractive.

Given the above and having in mind the existing technological facilities in museums abroad, RISE accepts applications from museums interested in proposing an innovative idea aiming to promote and interpret their collections with the use of technology or other innovative uses of technology. Proposals from a team/ partnership of museums are encouraged. The submitted ideas should fulfil the following criteria in order to be shortlisted:

  • Serve specific and clearly justified needs of the museum
  • Include specific interactive/ emerging technologies
  • The final product will be displayed at the selected museum for at least two years after the competition of the project.
  • The museum is willing and able to contribute with expertise and material for the implementation of the project.

The application should be submitted online at the following link https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1wkcKCCFBJkkUvRP7EtJkLpU0ZawZFbvBzPL6OdAhMdc/edit by the 20th of September 2019, 11:59 p.m. Proposals can be submitted either in English or Greek.
All proposals should be clearly explained and include the following information:

  • Title and general description of the proposed project.
  • What type of interactive media or emerging technologies you would like to incorporate in your space? (the idea may include augmented, mixed or virtual reality, holographic models, 3D models, sensors, gamification, etc)
  • How will this technology be integrated and used in a museum space?
  • How will this technology serve the needs of the museum?
  • How and to what extent will this technology make the visitors’ experience more interactive or immersive?
  • Does the museum already use any kind of interactive/emerging technologies today? If yes, what?
  • What is the approximate number of visitors the museum attracts annually?
  • How could the museum staff contribute in terms of content and expertise, if your idea is selected?

The competition will run in three phases:

Phase One: All proposals will go through a preliminary evaluation by RISE’s scientific committee. During the evaluation stage the committee has the right to ask the applicant for further clarifications. A maximum of five proposals will be shortlisted to the next phase for a more thorough evaluation. The RISE scientific committee consists of: Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert (co-ordinator), Andreas Lanitis, Marios Avraamides, Despina Michael-Grigoriou, Antigone Heraclidou, and Maria Shehade.

Phase Two: The scientific committee will have meetings with all shortlisted candidates in order to help them elaborate and finalize their proposal and draft an indicative budget.

Phase Three: The final proposals will be presented to a second committee of RISE experts that will select the winning proposal.

The winning proposal will be funded and developed by RISE with the help of the winning museum.  A contract between the two sides including all deliverables and obligations of each part will be drafted and signed before the commencement of the work.

Please follow this link to submit your expression of interest.

  • Πώς αυτή η τεχνολογία θα ενσωματωθεί και θα χρησιμοποιηθεί στο χώρο του μουσείου;
  • Πώς αυτή η τεχνολογία θα εξυπηρετεί τις ανάγκες του μουσείου;
