PhyDem Project

17 January. 2021
Motor functions constitute one of the most common chronic conditions in the elderly and are the largest single cause of long-term disability. People with dementia residing in long-term care are usually facing numerous motor impairments and go through painful therapeutic physical rehabilitation. In recent years, there have been a growing research interest towards designing non-pharmacological interventions aiming to improve the quality of life for people with dementia within long-term care. We are currently exploring the use of Virtual Reality for patients with mild, moderate, and severe dementia in collaboration with the Archangelos Michael Elderly People Nursing Home / Rehabilitation Centre for Patients with Alzheimer. We are exploring the appeal of using VR for people with dementia, and the observed impact such interaction has on their physical rehabilitation. Moreover, we are investigating the design opportunities, pitfalls, and recommendations for future deployment in healthcare services. Using a user-centred design approach, we are carrying out multisite trials to evaluate the effectiveness of the virtual reality system that will be developed and to improve its usability.
