Biography

Dr. Andreas S. Panayides (EMBS and SPS Joint Cyprus Chapters Chair, Senior IEEE Member) is VIDEOMICS FRG Team Leader with the CYENS CoE. Formerly, he was the Head of Medical Image and Video Processing at the Electronic Health (eHealth) Laboratory of the University of Cyprus and a Senior Research Fellow with Sigint Solutions Ltd. He was the R&D project manager and Biomedical Imaging area leader of the Integrated Precision Medicine Technologies (IPMT) – Teaming Phase 1 project (2017-2018) and a Visiting Research Assistant Professor and Assistant Director at the Image and Video Processing and Communications Lab of the University of New Mexico (2015-2017). From 2012 to 2014 he was a Marie Curie Fellow (IF) with the Communications and Signal Processing group at Imperial College.
 

His research interests are in adaptive video processing and delivery for real time applications, including 360o video coding, computer vision for healthcare applications using deep learning methods, interactive and distributed analytics of large-scale image and video databases, and mHealth and eHealth systems and services. He has published more than 80 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, and book chapters, in these areas, including 1 patent. He was the lead Guest Editor of IET Healthcare Technology Letters, Special Issue on mHealth-Emerging Mobile Health Systems and Services (10 papers), published in 2016 and the Guest Editor of the research topic on Connected Health: Status and Trends (11 papers) published by Frontiers in Digital Health in 2020. Since 2021, Dr. Panayides has been an Associate Editor of the IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics (J-BHI) (Impact Factor: 7.021).
 

Dr. Panayides is actively involved in national and international research projects, funded by the European Commission, the Research and Innovation Foundation of Cyprus, and the National Science Foundation, USA. He is also serving as an expert reviewer for H2020 proposals. Dr. Panayides has managed funding as principal investigator (PI) or co-PI of more than €1.7 million with €0.5 million awarded for personal fellowships. In 2016, he co founded 3AHealth (3ahealth.com), a start-up company based in Cyprus that provides innovative and citizen-centric solutions throughout the healthcare pathway. Dr. Panayides was the deputy national architect of Cyprus' EU Digital Covid Certificate (https://www.eudcc.gov.cy/) portal.
