MIG 2019 - ACM SIGGRAPH CONFERENCE ON MOTION, INTERACTION AND GAMES

The 12th annual ACM SIGGRAPH conference on Motion, Interaction and Games 2019 (formerly known as Motion In Games) was held at Northumbria University, Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom, from the 28th - 30th October,2019.

Dr. Panayiotis Charalambous, team leader of the V-EUPNEA MRG of RISE participated in this year's conference with a poster entitled "Why Did the Human Cross the Road?" and won the best poster award. The poster was co-authored by Prof. Yiorgos Chrysanthou.

I have been a part of the Motion, Interaction and Games (MIG) conference for many years. This conference is rapidly becoming one of the premier computer animation conferences in the world and one of the best places to interact with extremely talented people from both academia and industry. This year in Newcastle, I especially enjoyed the interactions with my colleagues, the cold weather and the high quality of papers and presentations, especially by the invited speakers. Last year’s MIG was very special to me; Yiorgos Chrysanthou and I organized the conference in Cyprus, and it has been an exceptional experience. I look forward to participating again soon!

Title: Why Did the Human Cross the Road?
Abstract
Many crowd and traffic simulation algorithms have been proposed. Despite some high-quality results, most of these systems do not consider important heterogeneous interactions between humans and traffic. Our goal is to create a multi-agent system in an urban setting where pedestrians and traffic interact gracefully in the presence of each other. In this work, we demonstrate some initial results from a deep reinforcement learning based framework used to train agents safely cross streets with traffic. Our framework can simulate street crossing behavior under various conditions without any explicit knowledge of the rules that govern this behavior.
