RISE is pleased to announce a unique summer opportunity for high-school students interested in STEM fields and gaming technologies. Designed to act as an integrator of academic research and industrial innovation, RISE hopes to use its Summer Scholars Program to inspire talented young students in Cyprus by exposing them to cutting-edge methods and Research in Interactive media, Smart systems and Emerging technologies – RISE.

Summer Scholars will participate in a week-long program that exposes them to the lively ecosystem of academics, researchers, creative and onward-looking people, innovators, entrepreneurs and practitioners that RISE has created in the heart of Nicosia. They will tour RISE’s facilities; be introduced to the latest methods and techniques in fields as exciting and different as artificial intelligence, visual sociology, computational cognition and smart systems; and have the opportunity to develop gaming and coding skills.  Besides being the most important job skills of the future, coding experience will be useful to any student considering participation in the annual Logipaignion Game Development Competition later this year.  The Summer Scholars Program is one of the ways RISE hopes to use its “Inspired by Humans; Designed for Humans” approach to instigate a culture of change among Cyprus’ future leaders and pioneers.

WHO CAN APPLY?
Applications for this highly selective program are welcome from students in Cyprus with a zeal for innovation and new ideas. Applicants must be between 14 and 18 years of age and returning to high school in the fall of 2019.

HOW DO I APPLY?
Via email to internships@rise.org.cy. All applicants should explain their interest in RISE and any experience with coding in a short (max 300 words) statement, accompanied by their full name, date of birth, school name, school year and contact information.  The deadline for applications is May 24, 2019.  Successful applicants will be notified by June 3, 2019. (Notification date has been moved to June 7, 2019)

WHEN IS THE ‘STEM AND GAMING SUMMER SCHOLARS’ PROGRAM?
The program will take place at RISE’s facilities in Nicosia from 8:00 to 13:00, Monday July 8 to Friday, July 12, 2019.  Morning refreshments and snacks will be provided; there is no cost for the program.

WHAT IS RISE?
RISE is the first Research centre in Cyprus focused on Interactive media, Smart systems and Emerging technologies.  Its aim is to become a centre of excellence that integrates academic research and industrial innovation through knowledge and technology transfer on the island and in the region. It is a joint venture between the three public universities of Cyprus (University of Cyprus, Cyprus University of Technology, Open University of Cyprus), the Municipality of Nicosia, and two renowned international partners, the Max Planck Institute for Informatics (Germany) and University College London (UK). RISE will fuel scientific, technological, and economic growth in Cyprus and Europe harnessing the power of research to improve the marketplace and solve real-world problems.
