RISE Up, Centre of Excellence- the Center for Research and Innovation in Cyprus that specializes in interactive media, smart systems and emerging technologies- is entering a new era with the introduction of a new name: CYENS.
The word "cyens" is an obsolete spelling of the word "scion", which means graft, a new beginning on a robust, fully developed organism. For our Center, the name means just that. At the same time, the pronunciation of the word as "science", emphasizes the capacity of the Center as a place of scientific research and experimentation.
Being the product of a teaming project between the three public universities of Cyprus- the University of Cyprus, the Cyprus University of Technology and the Open University- and two renowned European partners- the Max Planck Institute for Informatics (Germany) and the University College London (UK)- and coordinated by the Nicosia Municipality, the Centre is growing and spreading over new focus areas and activities. The year 2021 is marking a new milestone for our Centre: it is a year of growth and new beginnings. A new name, and a new home.
The Center began operations in 2018, with a small team of employees, and reached the end of 2020 with more than 85 researchers and supporting staff, with the goal to continue this upward trend, surpassing 120 employees by the end of this year. Reflecting the growth of the CYENS family, all employees and operations are moving soon, to the new -and final- location of the Centre: Dimarchias Square in old town Nicosia.
Simultaneously with the new name, the Center logo evolves from a two-dimensional version into a three-dimensional one. The new 3D design reflects the Center's specialization towards creating 3D representations of our world using virtual imprinting and 3D reconstruction for analysis, experimentation, and use in applications.
Along with the change of name and logo, a new website has been designed, www.cyens.org.cy. With a new design, the aim of the new page is to provide detailed information to the visitor regarding the actions of the Center in matters of research, training and educational programs, career opportunities, prospects of collaborations, as well as conferences and other events organized by the Centre.
CYENS' Director of Research Dr. Yiorgos Chrysanthou commented that “Despite the difficulties of the past year, we have been able to achieve significant progress, by increasing research output, forming international collaborations, and contributing to the society. The uptake of digital technologies has been accelerated to aid combat issues arising from the pandemic. This makes our growing expertise and capacity ever more essential and significant. The move to Dimarchias Square and the new name, CYENS Centre of Excellence, highlight our objectives to evolve the research and innovation ecosystem in Information and Communication Technologies, in Interactive Media, in the smart city."
In a statement, the Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Nestoras Nestoridis, stressed that: "We are delighted to announce that our Centre’s name is changing as of January 1st, 2021, heralding a fresh start. This fresh start reflects the Centre’s focus on the future. It also allows us to establish ourselves as the most innovative and trusted partner in interactive media, smart systems and emerging technologies through our world-class research. Our commitment to society, our associates and partners remains our highest priority. We look forward to welcoming you, once again, to our world of innovation.”
Welcoming this year of new beginnings for the Center, with its name change and move to its new premises, the Mayor of Nicosia and Chairman of the BoD, Constantinos Yiorkadjis, stated that,” CYENS CoE, led by the Nicosia Municipality, is part of the city and more importantly part of our wider strategy for sustainable urban development. Located in the heart of the Quarter of Creative Industries, in the historic center of the city, next to the buffer zone and adjacent to the Municipality, CYENS enhances the ecosystem and the development of the wider area as a hub of innovative entrepreneurship and creativity.”
The Center’s vision and goals remain the same: The undertaking and conducting of world-class scientific research to promote innovative thinking through multiple business sectors, creating social and economic benefits. Through synergies between the interdisciplinary teams that make up CYENS, the subsequent solutions offered, aim to be human centered.
