Currently, the cultural heritage sector in the European Union has to tackle, simultaneously, many different and rapidly evolving key challenges related to a)the environment (climate change and sustainability); b) public health (outbreaks such as COVID-19, which results in high health risks and the isolation of the population); c) technology (digital social media provide the platforms for the production and dissemination of creative content and knowledge that flows between borders instantly); and d) communities (many different types of engagement with cultural heritage from calling for active participation to being disconnected).
EU museums and heritage sites are dealing with these issues individually with their locally-available resources, which causes the fragmentation of the field on a European scale and limits the sector’s potential in contributing to societal challenges.
The overall objective of ReInHerit is to create a model of sustainable heritage management, which will foster a digital dynamic European network of heritage stakeholders. This model will be based on a digital cultural heritage ecosystem in which all the stakeholders (museums, heritage sites, policy makers, professionals and communities) will be provided with the tools and resources to communicate, experiment, innovate and disseminate European cultural heritage.
